How to Feel Grounded in Three Minutes

To feel grounded in three minutes, take three short steps, one after another: breathe and notice where you are, turn to face what is ahead of you rather than what is behind, then notice the small things that keep you steady on the way there. You don't need a quiet room or an app. You need your breath, your senses and three honest minutes.

Feeling scattered usually isn't about having too much to do. It's about being in too many places at once: half in this morning's conversation, half in tomorrow's deadline, barely in the room you're standing in. Grounding brings you back to one place. Here is how.

What are the three steps to feel grounded?

Step one: how do I arrive where I am?

Sit or stand with both feet on the floor. Take a slow breath in through your nose and let it out a little longer than it came in. Close your eyes if you can. Notice what surrounds you: what you can hear, what you can feel against your skin, what you can smell. You're not trying to change anything yet. You're just arriving.

Step two: how do I face forward instead of back?

You can't change your past, but you can change your direction. Let whatever happened this morning, or last week, stay where it is. Ask yourself one quiet question: where do I want to go from here? Not the whole plan. Just the direction. Grounding is the moment you stop facing backward and turn toward where you want to go.

Step three: what keeps me steady on the way?

Now notice how you're getting there. The small things that keep you pointed at your own true north: a walk at lunch, a call to someone who knows you, one task done properly instead of five done halfway. You don't have to solve your life in three minutes. You only have to face the right way, and take one more slow breath before you open your eyes.

Why three minutes and not longer?

Three minutes is short enough that you won't talk yourself out of it, and long enough to notice where your attention has gone and bring it back. A short practice you keep every day goes further than a long one you only manage once. On days you want more, stay longer. On busy days, three minutes is plenty.

When should I use this?

  • Before work, to set the day. We wrote a whole ritual for this: three minutes before work.
  • Between tasks, when your head is still in the last meeting.
  • After a long stretch of screens, to come back into your body.
  • Before sleep, to let the day settle before you lie down.

Any moment you feel scattered, rushed or pulled in too many directions is a good moment.

What if my mind keeps wandering?

It will, and that's fine. Grounding isn't an empty mind. The moment you notice you've drifted, you're already back. Return to the breath, or to a scent in front of you, as many times as you need. The returning is the practice.

Does scent help you feel grounded?

For many people, yes. Scent pulls you into the present in a way thinking can't, because you can only smell something right now. Earthy notes like sage, soil, cedar and vetiver feel especially steady. Keep something close that you can breathe in at the start of step one: a sprig of herbs, a cup of tea, or a scented card. More on this in what scents help you feel grounded.

How do I do this with the Grounding Ritual Card?

With the Grounding Ritual Card, the three steps come with a scent and a voice. Hold the card and breathe in sage and earth. Tap it with your phone or scan its QR code, and a 30 day guided meditation journey opens in your browser, with no app to download. Each day is about three minutes, guided by the voice of our co-founder Duda with sounds from nature, from Day 1 to Day 30.

You're not adding a task to your day. You're giving three minutes of it back to yourself.
