Grounding vs Earthing: What's the Difference?
People use the two words interchangeably, but they mean different things. Earthing is the idea that direct physical contact with the earth's surface — bare feet on soil — has electrical effects on the body; the scientific evidence for this is thin. Grounding, as practised in mindfulness, is an attention practice: returning to the present moment through your senses. You don't need to believe any theory for it to work.
What does earthing claim?
Earthing (sometimes also called grounding, which is where the confusion starts) proposes that the earth's surface carries a negative charge, and that skin contact lets the body absorb electrons — with claimed effects on inflammation, sleep, and pain.
A handful of small studies exist. They are limited in size and design, often funded by interested parties, and the mainstream scientific view remains unconvinced. Walking barefoot on grass is still a lovely thing to do — the cool of the ground, the texture of it, the way it slows your steps. It just doesn't need an electrical story to justify it.
What does grounding mean in mindfulness?
Grounding, in the sense therapists and meditation teachers use it, is simpler and better supported: when the mind spins into the past or the future, you bring attention back to the present through the body and the senses.
Feel your feet. Hear the room. Name what you can see. Techniques like 5-4-3-2-1 are grounding in this sense — attention practices, not electricity. They work for a plain reason: attention that is genuinely occupied by the present has less bandwidth for the spiral.
Which one is EverAura's Grounding?
The mindfulness kind, deliberately. Grounding is our one-minute nature ritual — feet, breath, attention — a short daily return to the present through nature. The earth in our practice isn't a source of electrons; it's a teacher of steadiness. We keep the two ideas separate on purpose: honesty is part of the practice.
So which should you try?
Both, in a sense — just with honest expectations. Go barefoot on grass because it feels good and slows you down, not because of electrons. And practise the attention kind of grounding daily, because that one has a mechanism you can feel working the very first time: one minute, feet, breath, attention.
FAQ
Is earthing scientifically proven?
No. The studies that exist are small and methodologically weak. Time outdoors clearly benefits wellbeing — but that's explained by light, movement, and attention, not electrons.
Is grounding just meditation?
It's a close cousin. Grounding is narrower: a quick return of attention to the present through the senses. A minute is enough; meditation can go longer and deeper.
Do grounding mats work?
We don't sell them and won't judge them for you — but know that the evidence behind them is the earthing theory above, which remains thin.
